In her next piece, inspired by Vir­gin­ia Woolf’s 1938 essay, Maud Blan­del explores satire and grot­esque to ques­tion the motives and mech­an­isms of war. 

Fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of the Brit­ish author who invest­ig­ated the con­nec­tions between war and the pat­ri­archy in an implac­able epis­tolary work of fic­tion, Maud Blan­del also won­ders: “what can we do to avoid war?”. In order to coun­ter­act the feel­ing of power­less­ness behind such a ques­tion, Three Guineas (work­ing title) seeks ambigu­ous situ­ations and emo­tion­al con­trasts. The cho­reo­graph­er con­tin­ues to explore a mode of instant­an­eous com­pos­i­tion in which the prin­ciples of the col­lect­ive col­lide with the sin­gu­lar expres­sion of each of the three per­formers. In an ener­get­ic and dis­or­gan­ized per­cuss­ive flow, any attempt to obey the beat will be delib­er­ately sab­ot­aged. The piece favors the pre­cari­ous and the irra­tion­al, mobil­iz­ing what’s very intense or very gentle, what’s heavy and what’s light, smiles and the tra­gic, embra­cing satire to over­turn mil­it­ary logic.
