Vivace

Lively!

It starts with a Madis­on, a play­ful, upbeat little line dance, the star of the dance­floors. But Vivace has plenty sur­prises in store for us: to a back­ground of high-tempo pop, baroque and elec­tro, the cho­reo­graphy blos­soms into an aston­ish­ing jour­ney through music and ges­ture. It should be noted that on a music­al score vivace indic­ates a rap­id beat (the equi­val­ent of “lively”). The same word is used in French to describe per­en­ni­als, those plants for whom sur­viv­al is a con­stant strategy… Absorbed by pulsing rhythms, the dan­cers become lively bod­ies of a new kind, all vital­ity, determ­in­a­tion, and persistence.

    “It’s one of the venues well worth checking out in the Fringe Festival: La Parenthèse, located on rue des Etudes. This is where La Belle Scène Saint-Denis has taken up residence with a highly anticipated programme. The morning is reserved for dance, the afternoon for theatre. A genuine showcase for its programmed artists, La Belle Scène Saint-Denis is a staunch supporter of new productions.
    The first cycle of the dance programme, running until 15 July, opens with Vivace, the new production by Alban Richard, artistic director of the CCN de Caen. 35 minutes during which music will make the performers’ bodies fluctuate between 132 and 170 BPM. Anthony Barreri and Yannick Hugron, the performers of this duet, seem to have come straight from a nightclub with their clubber outfits. That’s what Vivace is about, putting rhythm at the centre of the production. Can one perform the same movements to classical music, pop music or hardcore techno?
    The two dancers lend themselves to the choreographer’s game. While the idea is simple on paper, the choreographic canvas reveals the difficulty posed by this score of movements. Each part of the body expresses itself: the hand, arm, head, chest, legs and pelvis. One action follows the other at a steady pace. The music interacts with the danced gesture, producing delightful moments. The choreographic demonstration is a genuine success. We leave the show feeling light but also itching to dance and to move.
    With Vivace, Alban Richard has created a piece that will let the widest possible audience discover dance simply, free of preconceptions.”

    “120 beats per minute! Allegro, non troppo!
    On white carpet, in shorts and leggings, two dancers execute a repetitive frontal duet to a musical selection ranging from Bach to disco: in multiple variations of legs, in unison, with deadpan humour, Anthony Barreri and Yannick Hugron perform a pleasant and hilarious, brightly coloured ritual. Baroque and angular, taking inspiration from robotic squares and fashion shows, little by little they whip themselves into a frenzy, in isolation, to this patchwork and disorienting musical soundtrack.
    Segmented, binary, exploring infinite rhythms, the racket they create gets hearts and pulses beating joyfully and enthusiastically. Pounding the ground, lurching in front of us, their zip-line footwork is full of inventiveness, annoying but in a good way. The audience gets caught up in the rhythm, in osmosis and full empathy with our two lively and amusing marathon runners whose corporeal mechanics has them flying in all directions in a spring-loaded race against the clock!”

    "Vivace, c’est un magnifique spectacle chorégraphique, avec de la grâce, de la poésie, et une certaine belle complicité fusionnelle, entre les deux danseurs, Anthony Barrieri et Yannick Hugron. Leurs danses, leurs pas, leurs gestes, ont été un beau voyage à travers les styles, les époques musicales, du madison à l’électro, en passant par le classique. Sur des rythmes différents mais intenses, les corps épousent la musique, font corps avec elle. Une belle alchimie s’est créée entre eux deux, où leurs corps mettaient en scène des expressions. Ce fut un beau tableau chorégraphique.

    Anthony et Yannick, qui travaillent aussi pour d’autres compagnies, ont été réunis sur ce projet, par Alban Richard, avec qui ils avaient déjà travaillé. Pour ce spectacle, écrit et imaginé par le chorégraphe, directeur du centre chorégraphique de Caen, le duo a travaillé sur des gestes, tels ceux d’arbitres, pour leurs danses. L’objectif était de ne jamais laisser tomber les pulsations, qui oscillaient entre 132 et 170 battements par minute. Anthony et Yannick ont beaucoup travaillé les personnages, à l’instar d’une pièce théâtrale mimée. La danse, comme la musique, est une forme d’expression artistique, où le spectateur peut l’interpréter suivant diverses possibilités."

    "La saison culturelle se termine déjà pour le THV avec deux représentations du spectacle d’Alban Richard du
    Centre chorégraphique national de Caen. Vendredi 28 mai, ce sont les élèves et personnels de l’Établissement
    régional d’enseignement adapté Les Terres rouges qui en ont profité les premiers. Stéphane Serru, le
    proviseur avait souhaité reprogrammer le spectacle prévu pour la fête de l’établissement l’an dernier, annulé
    en raison de la crise.

    Sortir des stéréotypes
    L’objectif étant d’ouvrir les élèves à la culture et à des situations sans stéréotypes. « La danse est un art et
    un art, ça n’a pas de sexe, Messieurs » a-t-il lâché à des jeunes qui portent parfois un regard sexiste sur cet
    art.? La demi-heure de spectacle ultra-rythmé a sans doute fait évoluer les mentalités.? Intitulé « Vivace » la
    performance porte bien son nom. Le duo évolue sur une bande sonore au tempo entre 132 et 170 battements
    par minute, de la petite musique de chambre à l’électro la plus débridée."
